If I were the devil I'd make you shout and scream At just the thought of me If I were the devil I'd make you clutch the earth Just to feel my shadow I'd make you taste my food And you would revel in the poison That they bring to me If I were the prince And every morning saw my glory This sun would set your feet on fire Set your feet on fire If I were the devil I'd burn all your books And you'd just read my name If I were the devil All the soldiers would die in vain So you could see my face Feel my embrace If I were the devil I would swallow every soul And you would beg them out Like Ruth before her king If I were the devil I would coil and constrict you And then let you go Because hell is being alone

Slipping away Hands are so tired We are not here But for a little while Shed not a tear All is won and all is lost Put me in stone I will remain And liight on your mind As an old song This is my time I offer it up All as a dream On a short night Shed not a tear All is won and all is lost This is was time I offer it up All as a dream On a short night Shed not a tear All is won and all is lost We are not made Nor never unmade What we have been We forever will be
3.
We howl and we moan, "Where has transcendence gone?" Exist to exist And cut out when we wish Heads full of ash When all we keep won't last And still we sift Through this continental drift I have this gift: To never believe And still to hold on If justice is blind Why's freedom consigned? When justice can see All it sees is green I feel the end Rub some dirt in my hands To this we return With all that we've learned I have this gift: To never believe And still to hold on
4.
Old Salty 03:54
Old Salty stands silent with a wind withered face The sea wind is breathing him on and on, on and on The sun exhales rivers of light on the water Old Salty aims down one into the horizon Salty Dog, Salty Dog Cut loose the anchor The streams lift you onward There's nothing to keep you Oh, Salty Dog, Salty Dog Cut loose forever There's no arms to hold you down No arms to hold you No screaming, no sirens, no handcuffs and libel The sea breeze is breathing him on and on, on and on No buildings, no statues, no monuments fading Just and old man's soul stirring with words, "Peace, be still" Salty Dog, Salty Dog Cut loose the anchor The streams lift you onward There's nothing to keep you Oh, Salty Dog, Salty Dog Cut loose forever There's no arms to hold you down No arms to hold you

about

The If I Were the Devil EP features four new tracks, headlined by the lead single from this fall’s full-length album West of Zanzibar — a collection of songs and instrumentals conceived as a “live film score” set to director Tod Browning’s demented 1928 revenge thriller.

The first single from West of Zanzibar, “If I Were The Devil,” is a slithery, barely controlled blues dirge that dives deep into the head of the film’s revenge-obsessed protagonist: a sadistic magician played by Lon Chaney.

While the first track’s dark and sprawling atmosphere sets the stage for the full-length album, the rest of the EP showcases the range of Subterranean Howl’s versatility, a hallmark of their live shows. “Render Unto Caesar,” “Old Salty,” and “Continental Drift” feature banjos, saxophones, synths, drum machines, and accordions galore on top of the band’s signature driving guitar attack.
